Part of being a "cool" nerd in high school was to impress you fellow geeks with the sophisticated reading choices. "Magus" by John Fowles, this beautiful more than 600 page long, monster of a novel, was a part of my "wow" reading list. I don't think I actually understood what this post-modern masterpiece was about at that time. However, what was intriguing was the young British teacher Nicholas and his strange hallucinatory adventures on a beautiful Greek island of Phraxos. There were ghost-like female characters, a wealthy magician, Conchis who played most skillful mind games with Nicholas and the idea of an ordinary man who unexpectedly finds himself in the most bizarre and fantasy-like world of the island. That was the book to show off with in front of other adventure-hungry, young intellectuals.
Recently, I have had a pleasure to watch the movie based on the book from 1968, with a stellar cast including Michael Caine, Candice Bergen, and Anthony Queen. The reason I decided to write this post was, however, one and only French style icon, Anna Karina. Movie aficionados know Karina mostly as Goddard's muse and a symbol of the French New Wave cinema. In this film, as the girlfriend of the main character, she epitomized the modern, free-spirit and liberated girl.
What really caught my attention was her effortless style. Her clothes seem so modern and universal. As it is November and most of us would do so much to escape the "gray zone" period we are entering, "The Magus" is a great inspiration for a warm getaway in the winter. In the movie, Anna Karina wears simple white pants, front-tied shirts, boyfriend jeans, beautiful girly dresses, straw hats, man's shirts, ankle wrap flats and looks just so easy-going and stylish. Inspired by that, I provided a classic "warm get-away fashion capsule" for you. It will never go out of style and will make your suitcase light suitcase.
