Vanessa Redgrave as Isadora Duncan in "Isadora" Dress, Figure / Sandals, Ancient Greek Sandals Watch, Armband / Bag, Penti
She traveled a lot. She was famous, free-spirited, independent and genuine feminist at heart. She loved to be in love as much as dancing and summers in Greece. Many called her the mother of the modern dance. Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce the style muse who inspired this post, the one and only Isadora Duncan.
I have just finished reading "My life," the autobiography of Duncan and I am inspired by her adventurous life and the fact how ahead of her times she was. Her opinions on relationships, morality, art and vegetarianism make it so hard to believe that she was born in San Francisco as long ago as in 1878. Her own life story is as tragic (the death of her children, multiple romances, not having a stable income), as romantic (passionate passages about her lovers, appreciation of beauty, poetry, music, etc.)
One of the countries, which made her feel very content was Greece. A funny fashion fact was that she so admired ancient traditions of that country that when she stayed there, she only wanted to be dressed in tunics and white cloth draped around her body, as well as sandals. A simple, short tunic was her signature fashion piece for many years, and she wore it even in the opera during her visit to Russia, to a great surprise of local aristocracy dressed to their best in fur and most expensive jewelry imaginable.
As I just spent last few weeks traveling, I really appreciate the simplicity of my fashion choices. As Europe is really hot this summer, I usually wear simple, light cotton dresses and silk pants and I can spend weeks in sandals. I found a lot of similarities between my personal summer style and Isadora's clothing choices:).
If you want to find more about Isadora, the dancing goddess, you should watch the movie "Isadora" with Vanessa Redgrave, a beautiful treat for fashion and art-loving audience.
Please share what your fashion staple pieces for this summer are! Are you a minimalist as I am? Stay in the shade and have fun!
