Aren't we all dreaming about the jet-setter vacation? At least once, probably somewhere in Mediterranean region, it would be perfect. This time you are in luck as your last chance offer is covered by the price of one movie ticket. A Bigger Splash opens the door to the life of the affluent in one of the most spectacular islands of Italy, located between Sicily and Tunisia. We are seduced by the mysterious charm of Tilda Swinton, who plays Marianne, a Bowiesque rock star, recovering from a throat surgery and entangled in a strange love triangle with her ex-boyfriend, Harry, Ralph Fiennes, who is brilliant in this role and her photographer boyfriend Paul (Mathias Schoenaerts). The outsider in this situation is Harry's newly-found daughter played by Dakota Johnson. The show is completely stolen by almost silent Swinton and exuberantly play boyish Fiennes. Italian charm of the island vacation is not idealized though. There are illegal emigrants, snakes, mosquitoes and the villa looks like it needs renovation, while all the vacationers are fighting with their inner battles.
Before I went to see A Bigger Splash, I did my homework and re-watched La Piscine (The Swimming Pool), would which it was loosely based will ultimately encourage you to watch both, if you have not seen it. It is a pure visual delight to see young Romy Schneider, Alain Delon and Jane Birkin in one movie. It is painfully slow at times and so very different from A Big Splash. To be honest, I prefer the modernity of Guadagnino's movie. The music, current social European problems, celebrity cult, fashion, I cannot deny I was seduced by A Bigger Splash and left the movie theater in a mood similar to that when you are coming home from a very satisfying summer vacation. It was quite a trip!
