The hoodie is such a prominent element of street fashion. Even those of us who cannot care less for style and trends own at least few of hooded sweatshirts, as they are so comfortable and practical. I will never forget my two first hoodies that I got from my family in New York when I was about 12 and living in Poland. One was white with the image of entire Simpson family and the other just red and white with Coca-Cola logo. I cannot even tell you how attention grabbing that was when I was walking down the hallways of my school. At this moment in the history of fashion, the unimaginable happens, as a hoodie is getting its stylish upgrade all over the runways. Get ready to completely change your perception of what hoodie can be mixed and matched with and what occasions it is best for.

One important rule to remember is that in order not to look like a parody of a high-school girl, during a day wear your hooded sweatshirt under a well-fitted blazer or a nice classic trench-coat. For the special evening effect, match black hoodie with a super light pastel maxi pleated skirt or put it over the sexy black or floral slipper dress. I opted for traditional black hoodies with some attention grabbing elements like lace hood, gold chains or leather appliqué.  Black is a perfect color to add to any evening or formal style. However, if you are more of a risk-taker, go for hoodies in pastel colors of the spring. Believe me, nobody will think you just walk out of the gym like that!

Fashion is changing so much in its nature, and high style is incorporating elements that were unmentionable in the world of haute couture, e.g. from jogger pants, sneakers to sweatshirts, etc. However, it is no longer as it was in the 1990's when Juicy Couture's sweatpants were standing for comfort and sexiness. Now, what fashion designers are striving to accomplish is to popularize a risky marriage of comfort and luxury by mixing and matching high and low style elements and creating a modern and edgy look.

A few days ago, I was listening to the BBC radio interview with the costume designer Jenny Beavan, known to larger audiences as the inappropriately dressed Oscar winner for the best costume design in Mad Max: Fury Road. She accepted her award wearing comfortable flat shoes and black pants and a leather jacket from one of the high-street brands, decorated by her with Swarovski crystals. You can either imagine or watch the video of the reaction of the Hollywood A-Listers to her walking the red carpet dressed like that. After all the mayhem that her "personal Oscar style" caused in the social media, Ms. Beavan commented that she wanted to be dressed in the spirit of the costumes, she designed for the characters in Mad Max. She said that she was never much of a fancy gown kind of person and her back problems did not make it easy to wear any kind of high heel shoes. However, that whole situation raised a crucial question in the fashion world: Did Jenny Beavan mark the death of the red-carpet style as it was or was it just a single incident of a personal bravery? Hoodies and sneakers on the pages of Vogue and in the editorials of digital fashion super-powers like Net-a-Porter are excellent indicators that change already has taken place.

Let me know how you like wearing your hoodies? Would you be willing to wear it for a fancy occasion?

P.S. In collages for this post, I used Lupita Cos' fashion illustrations. I am so obsessed with the work of this Madrid-based fashion illustrator, graphic and fashion designer. Find out more about her design on her profile on  Behance and Tumblr.
