BROOK THERE

There is a saying: "Maine is a state of mind." From my many trips to this uniquely beautiful part of America, I can tell you; it's quite a place when it comes to creativity, sense of beauty, design, art and of course fashion! As I proved many times on this blog, I wholeheartedly support emerging designers who care about fashion sustainability as well as manufacturing locally. This time I would like to introduce three amazing fashion designers straight from Maine, one of my most favorite places on earth.

Brook There, a brand created and designed by Brook DeLome specializes in sustainable clothing and lingerie using high-quality organic cotton and silk. In 2009 Brook opened her store in an up and coming artsy part of Portland, Maine. The place functions both as a store and a studio where Brook overseas every seam and even hand-paints the bags that are part of her collection.

Brook describes her work as something on edge between manufactured, something that isn't and art/design. Brook also has a very cool blog, on which she shares her thoughts on consciousness, sustainable thinking and many other fascinating subjects. Her last lingerie collection Fall 2015 was photographed by a talented Christie Renee Jorro, whom she met on the Instagram (Cheers to great social media collaborations!) If you are looking for unique, comfortable and stylish lingerie, check out her website!

Another creative boutique placed in Portland, which I have been checking out with religious devotion is More & Co, a beautiful store co-created by Maria Vetoes, Christopher Ryan, Ryan Shipmate and Lynsey White. It is a concept store with everyday objects, which can add this magic spark to our standard living spaces. The owners make sure that the themes and ideas change periodically and they support local manufacturers and artists. On their website, they state that they live in Maine, but they are still dreaming about it. I am officially obsessed with their Main-theme t-shirts and sweatshirts.

Last but not least, the way I found out about Maine-based brand MYFAWNWY happened as a result of valid research. This summer, I wrote about New York-based boutique The Rising States, which has a unique selection of clothing from emerging designers. I featured some dresses, and a few months later, my friend really wished to find out more about as she wanted one of them for her birthday. That is how I discovered Maeve Broome, the designer behind MYFAWNWY, residing on Bear Island in Maine.

Maeve is a self-taught fashion designer who often experiments with hand-dyed textiles that she incorporates into unique garments. Her collections like "Island and I" are inspired by Maine landscape, nautical themes, textures and natural colors. She even uses salt water as her dying technique.

There is not that much information about Maeve on the internet. However, I found out that a few weeks ago she was raising funds to start a nine-month residency at the Textile Art Center in Brooklyn, NY and I am keeping my fingers crossed for her success as the program began in September. One of her goals that she mentioned was that she wanted to work with Maine-based manufacturers and produce locally, which I will always try to support on this blog. Good luck Maeve and I hope I will be able to see your art show with the new collection in Brooklyn next year finishing your residency!

Let me know if you know of any emerging, independent designers whom you respect and support!
