If you want to escape the city heat without serious travel planning, in a bit more than an hour by just taking train, bus or driving (Directions ) to a very cool and colorful Rockaway Beach 89 in Brooklyn.
I was there last weekend with my mom who loves the ocean and, as I have not been to this beach for a few years,  I was pleasantly surprised how colorful and visually fun it has become.

When you walk from the subway station to the beach, there will be Playland Motel on your left, which is a fun looking place if you do not want to come back home after a long day at the beach, with a great restaurant and a bar. On the beach boardwalk, which is still being reconstructed after the hurricane damage, you can get a healthy juice, coffee and something to eat at La Fruteria Rockaway Beach. If you happen to forgot your surf board, there is a place to rent it next to the cafe. The shop rents bikes and sells all the beach gear you need.

There is no need to pack any luggage to get to Beach 89 in Rockaway, Brooklyn but if you need to any suggestions how to pack light for a day, just scroll down or check my beach packing instructions over here!

Let me know how you liked it! Please share what are your favorite daily get-aways! Stay cool!
