How to wear your denim? Master Class from Candice Bergen |
Before the Easter Weekend, I was trying to figure out which movie to watch. It has been my regular tradition for some time now. Unexpectedly, I had the flashback of this scene with a very lavish Easter procession in a small Italian village, which ends up in a one big fight following the great slapstick tradition, the Italian style. The scene was from the movie Night Full of Rain, 1978 directed by Lina Wertmüller.
I decided to mention this movie on my blog for a few good reasons. First, it is visually breathtaking due to amazing Italian architecture (Rome) and incredible interiors present in almost every scene of the movie. In the the seventies, Lina Wertmüller was one of a very few female directors. Her cinematographic themes focused on love, politics and never-ending issue of battle of sexes. Finally, main female character in the movie was played by Candice Bergen who dressed in a stunningly appealing American, mannish way, very much Ralph Lauren style and was just incredible in this role.

Bergen is one of the most underrated and interesting beauty icons of American cinema. Betty Halbreich, famous Bergdorf Goodman's personal shopper, mentions in her memoir this story of meeting Candice for the first time . Candice being a sporty girl from California was not into dressing elegantly because she spent most of her childhood horse riding. However, when she started trying on expensive dresses, she looked like a real movie star. I browsed through many of her pictures from the '60s and '70s and she truly embodied the ideal of American girl with blond hair, blue eyes and sporty lean physique.
What intrigues me about her fashion sense from a stylist’s perspective, is how she made tomboyish look very sexy. Moreover, she looked great in jeans. Don’t get me wrong, but I think it is pretty easy to make a celebrity look stunning in a custom-made, perfectly fitted designer’s gown. However, looking breathtaking in jeans is another matter. She focused on simple pairings: jeans and shirts with jewelry statement pieces; mostly necklaces. It really worked and made her look very fresh and modern. If you want to get some styling inspirations on how to master wearing denim like a model, watch Night Full or Rain or study Bergen’s style in details.
If you want to find out more about the actress, read her memoir Fine Romance. It is a funny and brutally honest collection of memories on her life, famous people she met and her adventures with fashion.
